Funding

16 - 19 Bursary 2011-12

If you continue in full time education in Kirklees, you may be entitled to apply for financial assistance if you think you will struggle with the costs of learning. All post-16 providers across Kirklees are going to allocate funding in the following ways in the 2011-12 academic year:

Category A:

If you are in one of the following groups, you will be entitled to a bursary of £1,200;

In care; A care leaver; in receipt of income support; or a disabled young person in receipt of Employment Support Allowance who is also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance.

The £1,200 will firstly be an 'in kind' payment for travel, food and course needs. Any remaining funds will be paid to you as long as you meet agreed standards set by your school/college.

Category B:

If your family's household income is below £16,190 (the threshold for Working Tax Credits / Free School Meals) and you will find it difficult to meet the costs of full time education you may be entitled to some support from your school/college including support with transport, on course costs and food. This will depend on you meeting agreed standards set by your school/college.

Category C:

Category C includes learners facing extreme financial barriers.

If you face real difficulties in continuing to stay in full time education, you will be able to apply to your school/college for assistance from the 16 - 19 Bursary. Any help offered will be entirely at your school/college's discretion.

If you think you are eligible under any of the above categories, you will need to apply to the college/school you are attending and provide appropriate evidence as set out by your college/school.

Bursary payments for category B and C learners will depend on the ability of your school/college to meet the cost. Every young person receiving a bursary must satisfy the eligibility criteria according to the YPLA Funding Guidance 2011/12.

What about the old EMA?

The old EMA scheme closed to new applicants on the 1st January 2011.

All students who first successfully applied for EMA in 2009/10 will continue to receive payments at the same level until the end of the 2011/12 academic year. All students who received the maximum weekly EMA payment of £30 in 2010/11 will be eligible for £20 for each week they are in education or training, until the end of the 2011/12 academic year. Students who received £20 or £10 in 2010/11 will not receive any EMA in 2011/12.
